Greenplum Database is an open-source, hardware-agnostic MPP database for analytics, based on PostgreSQL. It can scale towards a multi-petabyte level data workload without a single issue, and it allows access to a cluster of powerful servers that will work together within a single SQL interface where you can view all of the data. VMware Tanzu Greenplum Virtual R&D group is focussed to make a lasting impact on our enterprise-grade database offerings for VMware Tanzu Greenplum. Greenplum Virtual team is focused on automated vSphere based Greenplum deployments, GoLang based service modelling, control plane, terraform, vApp, Performance profiling and further. We are looking for engineers with strong technical leadership to be part of a world class database team, participating in the design and development of a next generation features including virtualization, deployment modelling for the Massively Parallel Processing shared nothing open source database.

Success in the Role:

What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

You have become familiar with the team's technical domain and have begun using that knowledge to advise and influence cross-team collaborations.

You have become immersed in the team's day to day operations, you are advising junior engineers on how to advance technical workstreams.

You have reviewed the team's code base and have started a process of code reviews

You have reviewed and influenced the team's architecture/design artifacts and decisions

You will lead the team in packaging the tools they built for production

You will lead the team in troubleshooting and mitigating high severity issues in production.

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

You will bring innovative ideas to Greenplum Virtual India team and write code primarily using GoLang, Python or C to interact amongst different products under the VMware Tanzu Greenplum portfolio.

You will bring best development and testing practices to deliver an enterprise product. You will bring in systems programming skills including system service modelling, HA and fault tolerance in distributed systems, Linux OS internals, terraform, vAPP based deployments etc to deliver high quality features You will collaborate with other Greenplum Open Source Community members on technical solutions or discussions.

In this role, you will become a technical subject matter expert for Greenplum Virtual team.

Provide technical guidance as we solicit product feedback from customers. Ensure what we're building meets the expectations of reliability, scaling, and security.

Mentor team members at different stages in their technical career. Support the team in breaking down complex stories into development tasks. Conduct code reviews, participate or lead technical context sharing discussions.

Collaborate with management, other engineers on the team and across the VMware Tanzu Greenplum Portfolio to achieve planned targets. You will additionally work with other functions such as program management, quality and support engineers to improve the product.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

We work as a distributed team in India, Beijing and the United States. Each team comprises Engineers, a Product Manager and an Engineering Manager. We value collaboration and start our days with daily stand ups where decisions are made to pair or work solo. Members often schedule knowledge sharing or technical review sessions on a regular basis. It is also important to us to make time to check in on the team's overall well-being, this is done by having retro sessions to review the past week's events, regular 1:1s with your engineering manager and periodic team health checks.

Where is this role located?

Flexible: The role is considered flexible and will be a mix of working from a local VMware office and remote depending on your preferences and the arrangements determined with your future manager. You will be expected to live within areasonable non-daily commute of the office.
